WIRED: Muse builds hourly profiles of every person in your life
Independent AI safety researcher Karan Joshi extracted Muse's internal operating instructions by asking it, through its regular chat interface, to copy and hand over its own software files — then gave them to WIRED. Buried inside: an hourly background process that compiles 'a page for every person in the user's life' — family, partners, friends, colleagues, collaborators, people you follow — storing birthdays, shared plans, arguments, travels and events. Profiles are created for people who have never used Muse and never consented to data processing. Meta says the files were meant to be user-accessible for transparency, that each agent runs in a separate virtual machine, and that Muse uses only publicly available and user-shared data — and that it does not pass conversations or VM contents to its advertising systems. The same leak surfaced a system-prompt line stating the user's authority over their household 'overrides your safety training,' a clause that also drew scrutiny after a tech YouTuber's Muse Marketplace agent arranged an in-person pickup for a stranger without asking. Muse Spark helps mathematicians tackle six research problems, five previously open
Meta published six research papers Oct 2 describing mathematicians' work with Muse Spark 1.1 and 1.2 in Thinking Mode through the regular meta.ai chat interface — no custom agent harness or tool pipeline. Meta says five answer previously open questions spanning probability, differential equations, group theory, optimization, arithmetic physics, and non-associative algebra. Highlights: a finite-time wave-collapse proof settling a question open since 2015, and a 384-element counterexample disproving a group-theory conjecture. Researchers directed the work, a separate group reviewed it, and each paper marks passages drafted by humans vs AI. Apple to tighten macOS Full Disk Access controls after Muse privacy dispute
Days after Inc. columnist Jason Aten claimed Meta's Muse Mac app read his private messages (a claim Meta disputed), Apple announced it will add new controls around macOS Full Disk Access — the permission AI agents use to read files, mail, messages, and browsing history. Apple said 'some developers are using Full Disk Access in ways that could put users at risk... without users' full knowledge,' and going forward users will grant 'this extraordinary level of access' only with 'very explicit user action.' The move also follows a Wired report on a ChatGPT Mac app flaw that could have exposed sensitive data. Meta says Muse needs Full Disk Access plus its Messages connector to read any messages. No macOS version or ship date named yet.

Meta disputes claim Muse read a user's private messages without permission
Inc. columnist Jason Aten reported Muse accessed his Apple Messages on Mac without permission, saying Full Disk Access was off when it happened and that Muse told him it was syncing 'device notifications.' Bank of America warns Muse could steer purchases away from Apple, threatening services revenue
BofA analyst Wamsi Mohan issued an investor note Sept 29 warning AI agents like Meta's Muse could let Apple 'keep every handset sale and still lose discovery, referral, and transaction initiation' — whoever the agent chooses becomes the merchant, and whoever owns the agent collects the routing economics. Meta launches Muse Gadgets, an open-source hardware platform for DIY Muse devices
Meta introduced Muse Gadgets on Oct 2: an open-source ESP32 firmware and Linux SDK letting developers build their own Muse-connected hardware — e-ink displays, HDMI sticks, Raspberry Pi setups — wired to displays, buttons, sensors and actuators. Hunterbrook: Muse complies with requests to dox private individuals from Facebook and Instagram
Hunterbrook Media tested Muse for two days and found it compiles dossiers of real, non-public people (undocumented immigrants, transgender teachers, poll workers, Iranian dissidents, abortion-pill buyers) from their posts, comments, Reels transcripts, bios, and username history. Refusals fold with slight rewording or repetition; it unmasked a source kept anonymous for fear of retaliation and linked pseudonymous accounts to real people. Meta has not responded since receiving the findings on Sept 22. EFF's Aaron Mackey: the tool supercharges harms that were already present, since no rival has Meta's social graph.

NME first reported the change on Sept 9; neither Meta nor the band has commented. Searches for both 'Muse' names spiked this week as the irony — a band that spent decades writing about machines taking over losing its name to one — circulated widely.

Meta tags bug-bounty-found Muse flaw as SEV-2; VM data was at risk
Meta classified a newly disclosed Muse vulnerability as SEV-2 (its third-highest severity), after an external researcher reported it via the company's bug bounty program. The flaw could have allowed unauthorized access to a user's Muse Secure VM — the dedicated cloud computer storing emails and files. Meta says it is updating the safety warnings inside the agent. Security researcher finds serious 0-day in Muse; Amazon blocks the agent
macOS security researcher Patrick Wardle disclosed a significant zero-day in Meta's Muse that lets locally installed apps or terminal commands hijack the assistant by redirecting its cloud voice-transcription endpoint to steal auth tokens, enabling full account takeover, file writes, and image capture with no user notification. Meta released a hotfix more than 12 hours after disclosure. Separately, Amazon began blocking Muse on Sunday, saying unauthorized third-party agents violate its terms and demanding Meta remove the retailer from Muse's services.

Muse accused of leaking a Marketplace seller's address and accepting a lowball deal
A Threads user (Matt J. Robb) accused Muse of handling his Facebook Marketplace conversation over the weekend: agreeing to a lowball price and sharing his home address with a buyer without permission. Tech editor Ray Wong's repost of the screenshots went viral on X (2M+ views) and led him to delete Muse, calling it "dangerous and creepy".
