School Closure, Calendar & Board Decision Watch

Why this is recommended

A school closing next year, a boundary change that moves a family's assigned school, a phone ban that starts in August, a start time that shifts a family's whole morning, or a four-day week each land at a Tuesday night meeting and reach parents as a rumor. The Tab reads the agenda and the vote.

What the Tab covers

Who it is for

The 30 million families with a child in one of the largest districts, and the taxpayers who fund them.

When it runs

School boards meet on Monday and Tuesday evenings and the decisions land after parents have gone to bed

Scope

The 200 largest US school districts; closures, consolidations, boundary and feeder changes; calendars, start dates, four-day weeks, snow day and remote day policies; cell phone, device and social media policies; bus routes, transportation eligibility and start times; superintendent hires and departures, board resignations and votes; budget cuts, layoffs and program eliminations; safety, security and discipline policy changes; curriculum, library and book policy decisions with official documents; meal, fee and supply changes; board elections and candidate filing

Suggested task

The objective your Tab starts with. You can edit every line of it once the Tab is yours.

School closure, consolidation and boundary redrawing decisions in the 200 largest districts, calendar changes including start dates, four-day weeks and snow day policies, cell phone and device bans, bus route and start time changes, superintendent and board turnover, budget cuts and layoffs affecting programs, school safety policy changes, curriculum and library policy decisions with official documents, school meal and fee changes and board election dates and candidate filing, with the district first and the decision in the title.

Track school district decisions in the United States. Report only confirmed, source-backed items from the last 7 days from the 200 largest districts: school closure, consolidation, boundary and feeder pattern decisions and votes; calendar changes including start dates, four-day weeks and snow day or remote day policies; cell phone, device and social media policy changes with dates; bus route, transportation eligibility and start time changes; superintendent hires and departures and board resignations; budget cuts, layoffs and program eliminations affecting students; safety, security and discipline policy changes; curriculum, library and book policy decisions documented in board records; school meal, fee and supply changes; and board election dates and candidate filing deadlines. Prefer district board agendas, minutes and votes, district announcements, state education agencies and established local education reporting; ignore social media rumors and partisan commentary, and report policy decisions neutrally with the official document. Put the district first in the title with the decision and the date. Use high severity for a closure or boundary vote, a phone ban or calendar change affecting the next school year, or a start time change in a district over 50,000 students. Return no more than 10 findings. Push each as a finding with a title, a two-sentence summary, sections for what was decided, who it affects, what happens next, the date, and the source link. If nothing qualifies, push nothing and submit the run receipt.
